The veil has been lifted from Studio 80 as it is expected to become more accessible for public use after City council secured a promise from the college this week.

On Monday night Coun. Donna Macdonald told City council she had asked Pat Henman, development coordinator for Selkirk College, if the college would relinquish some time for public use of the college’s 100-seat theatre, in exchange for a letter of support on their renovation project.

Henman had asked council if they would endorse a letter as they have applied to several different bodies for funding to revitalize and upgrade Studio 80.

“I think it is a huge step forward since it has been pretty closed to the public since about 1988,” said Coun. Marg Stacey.

The studio was part of the conversation the City had with the college when they were negotiating the terms for the renovation and ownership of the student dormitories, said Mayor John Dooley.

Henman was in agreement over Studio 80, said Coun. Macdonald.

In summer months there is the intention to hire someone and do the booking, lighting and technical end in order to make the space available to local artists when not in use by the Contemporary Music Program.

Studio 80 hosts a variety of activities, including performances by guest artists and clinicians, faculty concerts, student recitals and monthly performance classes.

The studio is outfitted with a professional recording booth so that all performances can be archived directly to CD or multi-track digital format for mastering in the recording studio.

The campaign to renovate the studio was launched in November of 2010.
