Less than one year after they obtained stabilized funding from City council, the Cultural Development Commission was back Monday night in council chambers and asking for that promise to continue.

With eight projects on tap for the 2011 year, CDC cultural development officer Joy Barrett told council the same $25,000 they handed the arm’s length City arts group last year would be needed to accomplish them this year.

The CDC aimed to continue with offering the Cultural Ambassador Award ($500), the cultural calendar ($1,000), oversee the Columbia Basin Trust funding process, and oversight of the Cultural Tourism Strategy project.

As well, the public art and city infrastructure integration initiative ($1,000), arts advocacy and support, development of a municipal cultural funding policy, and a mural policy (art in public places fact sheet).

In 2009 the Cultural Development Commission (CDC) received $10,000 from the City, and carried over $17,050 from 2008 — a sum that largely went to employing a cultural development officer in a part-time position.

Continuation of the 2009 work went into 2010 — including adding to the cultural calendar website and overseeing the cultural tourism strategy project — and the CDC asked the City for $25,000 for that year.

The CDC will be looking to be included as a $25,000 line item again in the 2011 budget city council will draft in the next few months in order to continue implementation of their three-year plan in 2011.
