The next chief of police for Nelson will come from Vancouver as the Nelson Police board has finally made its choice to replace Dan Maluta.

Wayne Holland will move from his inspector position with the Vancouver Police Department to take on the role of chief constable of the Nelson Police Department as of Jan. 27, 2011.

Hollan has put in 29 years with the Vancouver force, serving in a managerial capacity as executive officer of the operations division — Victim Services, Dog Squad, Community Services, School Liaison and Youth Services Units.

It was that broad scope of experience that sold the board on Holland, said board chair and Nelson Mayor John Dooley.

“He’s worked in municipal policing, but also has experience at the provincial level, working with provincial authorities,” said Mayor Dooley. “And he’s a very active volunteer who is dedicated to community service.”

Holland was also commander of the Corporate Services Section, and was seconded as the director of the Criminal Intelligence Service of BC/Yukon.

Accepting the position as chief constable for Nelson is an honour and a challenge, said Holland.

“To attain the position of chief constable within any police service is considered to be the singular defining achievement of a person’s career,” says Holland. “The Nelson Police Department has an excellent reputation across the province.”

Holland is currently the officer in charge of the Integrated Municipal Provincial Auto Crime Team (IMPACT), a unit whose mandate is the development of unique and innovative strategies to reduce auto crime. Under his leadership this team has won six provincial awards for excellence in service delivery.

As a volunteer, Holland spent five years as the executive director of the Vancouver Police Foundation and is past vice-president of the John Howard Society of the Lower Mainland.

He has been awarded several departmental commendations and was the recipient of the Queens Golden Jubilee Anniversary medal for his volunteer service to the community.
