COVID-19 Related Measures Act ticket issued to Winlaw woman following Nelson rally

Nelson Police have charged a Winlaw woman with being in contravention of the COVID-19 Measures Act following a rally Saturday afternoon in Nelson.
Nelson Police said the organizer of the Kootenay Freedom Peaceful Assembly rally, held at City Hall on Ward Street in Nelson, was issued a $2,300 Violation Ticket as a result of the current Provincial Health Order banning individuals who choose to organize gatherings in contravention of the COVID-19 Measures Act.
“On Saturday February 6, 2021, the organizer, a 58-year-old female from Winlaw, British Columbia, was issued a $2,300 Violation Ticket,” the Nelson Police media release said.
Nelson Police said at approximately noon Saturday, officers monitored and observed approximately 75 participants who gathered to listen to speakers with messaging around COVID-19 related guidelines, measures and enacted laws.
Police observed some participants standing on the sidewalk in the 300 block of Ward Street where they carried signs displayed for passing vehicles and pedestrians.
Nelson Police said in addition, approximately 40-45 participants conducted a march on Baker Street as part of the rally.
“Although the rally was observed to be peaceful, participants were in contravention of COVID-19 Related Measures Act,” Nelson Police said.
Nelson Police said the public is being asked to ensure compliance of the British Columbia Public Health Order, specifically the COVID-19 Related Measures Act, and individuals who fail to comply could face fines between $230 and $2,300.
