COVID-19 number spike in Kootenay Boundary

The BC Centre of Disease Control Geographic Distribution of COVID-19 by Local Health Area of Case Residence graphic shows a significant bump in case for the Kootenay Boundary region.
Between December 26, 2021, to January 1, 2022, some local health areas saw massive spikes in numbers from the previous week — December 19 to 25, 2021.
Trail saw the largest increase, registering 121 COVID-19 cases from 26 the week before — with health experts blaming on the fast-spreading Omicron variant.
Other numbers include Nelson 69 (31); Castlegar 33 (28); Kootenay Lake 4 (0); Arrow Lakes 17 (8); Grand Forks 22 (14) and Kettle Valley 8 (1).
In the East Kootenay, Fernie recorded 211 COVID-19 cases, a drastic increase from 39 prior to Christmas.
Cranbrook registered 94 (38); Creston 29 (2); and Kimberley 25 (11).
Wednesday, the Ministry of Health released the latest numbers in the province.
There were 3,798 new cases of COVID-19, including 11 epi-linked cases, for a total of 270,508 cases in the province.
The province said there are 29,967 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, and 237,195 people who tested positive have recovered. Of the active cases, 317 individuals are in hospital and 83 are in intensive care.
The remaining people are recovering at home in self-isolation.
The new/active cases include:
- 1,739 new cases in Fraser Health — Total active cases: 13,920
- 840 new cases in Vancouver Coastal Health — Total active cases: 9,100
- 473 new cases in Interior Health — Total active cases: 2,563
- 179 new cases in Northern Health — Total active cases: 750
- 566 new cases in Island Health — Total active cases: 3,631
- one new case of a person who resides outside of Canada — Total active cases: three
In the past 24 hours, no new deaths have been reported, for an overall total of 2,427.
