Copper wire thieves strike at Streetcar tracks near Lakeside Park

The Nelson Electric Tramway Society was shutdown for a brief time after copper thieves stole wire from the tracks of the local tram near Lakeside Park.
The theft happened Thursday (July 24) when tram officials noticed wire — 10 centimeters long used to ensure proper conductivity between rail gaps — was missing.
Nelson Police believe the unknown culprits cut sections off that would out of sight of the general public in the park to be taken to a metal recycling dealer and traded for cash.
“It is volunteers that keep our historic local tram running for all of our enjoyment,” NPD Sgt. Paul Bayes said in a media release.
“This thoughtless act will be a costly and time consuming repair for the Nelson Electric Tramway Society,” Sgt Bayes added.
The Nelson Electric Tramway Society, along with The Chamber of Commerce, Royal Bank, and Selkirk College restored this Streetcar, and the Society provides a scenic ride along Nelson’s waterfront.
The Nelson Electric Tramway Society is all volunteer driven and the streetcar is one of Nelson’s most interesting attractions.
Nelson Police are asking anyone with information about these thefts, or witness anyone tampering with the tracks to please contact them at 250-354-3919.

Sixteen-year-old lodged in cells for theft under $5000
During the early hours of Saturday morning, Nelson Police received a call from an Uphill resident of a person going through parked cars.
Police arrived to find an intoxicated 16-year-old male with a number of recently stolen items in his possession.
The teen was lodged into cells and held until sober and charged with theft under $5000 and possession of stolen property.
All items taken on this occasion were return to the proper owners.

Alcohol gets the best of new arrival to Heritage City
Nelson police charged a 46-year-old man with causing a disturbance, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts of under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act Friday (July 25).
The new arrival to Nelson made himself know to the community and NPD members with his drinking and belligerent behaviour.
The man was released with strict conditions and will appear in Nelson Law Courts this fall to answer to the charges.
NPD offices break up late night party on Baker Street
Late Friday (July 25) 11:45 pm. Nelson Police noted a large group of people, many having just arrived in Nelson, drinking, smoking drugs, and having a small party in the 400 block Baker Street.
Members spoke to the group, seized and poured out liquor and laid the appropriate charges.
The group was cooperative in cleaning up their mess and members spent some time educating them to the laws that applied to their conduct. It was also pointed out to the group that there are residents in the area that probably did not appreciate the noise they were causing that late at night.
