City receives over $43,000 in additional gaming grants

Seventeen city groups received additional funding from the Province Friday as $43,155 of $15 million in additional gaming grants came to the Heritage City, Premier Christy Clark said.
Nearly one quarter — $10,000 — of the new money Nelson will receive will be going to the Nelson Food Cupboard Society — the largest amount of the groups.
The West Kootenay Women’s Association will be receiving an additional $7,000 while the Association Des Francophones Des Kootenays Ouest will be given $5,500.
The LV Rogers Secondary School Parents Advisory Council will take in $3,980 and the Central Education Centre PAC $3,870. Other PACs include Blewett School ($525), Ecole Des Sentiers-Alpins ($150), Hume Elementary ($920), Kootenay Lake ($625), Nelson Waldorf ($735), Trafalgar ($2,260), Refish ($595), Rosemont ($455), South Nelson ($1,045) and St. Joseph ($565).
Nelson and District Museum Society will receive $2,250 and the Nelson Fine Arts Centre Society will be handed $2,680.
Funding for 500 organizations across the province was topped up to close to previous-year levels. Beneficiaries included youth arts and culture groups; community service groups such as Rotary and Kiwanis; fairs, festivals and museums; and organizations involved in community education such as parent support services.
As well, many groups in the health and social services sector — such as transition houses, food banks and drop-in centres received about 25 per cent more in 2010-11 than the previous year.
A review of Gaming grants underway
A prominent individual, who is independent of government, will be appointed to head the review to examine the role of government in gaming with input from charities, community members, industry representatives and local government.
In all, the Province provided about $22.5 million more in gaming grants in 2010-11 than during the previous year.
Gaming grants received by community organizations in 2010-11 now total $135 million.
