An increase of 35 percent more water usage in the summer of 2015 by residents has forced the City of Nelson managers to take drastic actions by implementing water restrictions effective, Friday, July 10, 2015.

“Residents have used 35 percent more water this year than last year at this time,” said a City of Nelson media release.

“So far, the summer of 2015 is recording the highest level of water use in recent years.”

In 2014, the City of Nelson also asked residents to conserve water during a warmer than normal summer.

The result has forced staff to implement new water regulation, effective immediately:

Lawns

  • Lawn sprinkler or irrigation watering is ONLY permitted between 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. or 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. ONCE PER WEEK on Wednesdays (for even-numbered addresses) or Thursday’s (for odd-numbered addresses).

Gardens

  • Garden watering is permitted with a hand-held watering can or using a hose equipped with a nozzle or watering wand, seven days a week between 4 a.m. to 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Other outdoor water use

  • Do not use water to wash sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, exterior windows or exterior building surfaces.

The lack of rainfall has force many areas of the province to usher in water restrictions.

Parksville and the District of Nanaimo moved to Level 4 water restrictions as extreme drought continues on Vancouver Island.

They are the first municipalities in B.C. to implement Level 4 restrictions.

Metro Vancouver region is in the second stage of a four-stage plan.

The City of Nelson Water Smart Ambassadors will be monitoring water habits in the city boundaries to make sure residents are following the new regulations.

Anyone not following the regulations maybe fined as per the City of Nelson bylaws.
