City hires new financial officer

There’s a new bean counter in town.
Well, at least at the City of Nelson level he’s new. The City has hired Selkirk College’s director of finance, Colin McClure, to tackle the prospect of handling taxpayer’s dollars in the Heritage city.
Previous to Selkirk, McClure worked for School District No. 8, receiving his chartered accountant designation in 2005.
“Colin brings some great finance experience to the table, and he’s local, so he knows the community and the area. We are confident that his experience will be a benefit, in helping staff and Council put our strategic objectives into action, and ensuring the long-term sustainability of the City’s finances,” said Mayor John Dooley in a statement.
The chief financial officer receives all of the money paid to the municipality, ensures all records of the funds and securities are kept, and invests municipal funds, until required, in authorized investments.
The position also requires expending municipal money as required by City council and exercising control and supervision over the financial affairs of the municipality.
City manager Kevin Cormack was unanimously named as the temporary replacement for Linda Tynan, who resigned from her position as chief financial officer on Dec. 31, 2010.
Tynana also held the position of director of corporate services, which is now filled by Frances Long.
McClure will join the City on a full time basis starting on Aug. 2.
Over the next two months he is expected to work on special projects on a part-time basis as he familiarizes himself with City of Nelson operations, meanwhile wrapping things up at Selkirk College.
