On April 1, there will be a little more than two weeks of waiting until the playing fields in Nelson open for the season.

And that’s no joke says City of Nelson Public Works Supervisor Karen MacDonald.

MacDonald is asking for the public to honour the “Fields Closed” signs surrounding the Lakeside fields on the waterfront until the middle of April.

“We’d like the public to stay off of the fields until April 15th,” MacDonald told The Nelson Daily, adding this closure is for all fields in Nelson.

“Right now the turf is vulnerable and is at a stage where a lot of damage can be done.”

City crews are currently seeding and fertilizing the fields to get them ready for the opening in the middle of April.

The mild winter has allowed public works crews to get a jump on the field maintenance for the 2015 season.
