CBT Funding to Community Groups 2012: The Results for Nelson

Nelson City Council spent three arduous hours Monday night dividing dollars among community organizations that had applied for this year’s Community Initiatives Funding. Fifty-two organizations applied, and 27 were successful although many of those did not get the amount they requested.

“The most difficult part of this is that we have so many good projects and we never have enough money,” said Councillor Deb Kozak at the end of the meeting, referring to the fact that the $126,445 available to Council was a little under half of the total of requests from community groups.

The funds don’t come from Nelson taxpayers, but from the Columbia Basin Trust (CBT), which annually doles out grant funding to municipalities and regional districts, who in turn distribute it among local non-profit projects. This year the CBT gave a total of $1,280,359 to communities across the region.

The following grants are the result of the organizations’ written applications, their two-minute presentations to Council, a ranking done by each Council member in private, and Monday night’s long deliberations. The Cultural Development Commission adjudicated the arts-related applications, although Council in come cases second-guessed the Commission’s recommendations.
