Act number two of the Capitol Kids Series is about to take center stage at the Victoria Street theatre when Kathryn Popham returns to take us down the yellow brick road with a ground breaking performance of the Wizard of Oz.

This ground-breaking presentation, set for Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Capitol Theatre, features local children playing the roles of Dorothy, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow, as well as many Flying Monkeys and Munchkins.

With a one-hour rehearsal the children are let in on the secret that will make them look like they’ve been practicing for weeks.

This play is an excellent choice for a wide range of audiences as it is universally appropriate and relevant and incorporates many elements of theatrical entertainment.

Popham is a renowned theatre artist living in Toronto, Ontario. Her family oriented shows have played to audiences across Canada, the U.S. and Great Britain.

Born and raised in Victoria, Popham began elocution lessons at the age of seven. She soon became a popular fixture at the annual Speech Arts Festival, reciting poetry and presenting dramatic monologues.

At the age of 16 she won the Audrey Johnson Award for most promising performer, a bursary for senior competitors in the festival. She was awarded an A.T.C.L. degree in Speech and Drama from the Trinity College of London at the age of eighteen, the youngest that one can receive an Associate degree.

Popham graduated from the Professional Actor Training Program at Victoria’s Camosun College in 1977.
