It’s been a busy Canada Day Weekend for Nelson Fire Rescue.

After dealing with a gas leak in the 800 Block of Victoria Street Friday, Nelson Fire Rescue was called to extinguish a kitchen fire later in the day before dealing with a pair of calls Sunday — fire to a fence and a motor vehicle accident.

At 2:46 p.m. Sunday, Nelson Fire Rescue responded to a fence on fire between two structures.

“The caller indicated that they had put most of the fire out with a garden hose,” said Assistant Fire Chief Mike Daloise in a media release.

“The duty crew responded immediately to ensure that the fire was not going to spread any further.”

Daloise said crews used a thermal imaging camera to locate a few hots spots that were quickly extinguished.

He said the fire appears to have originated in the landscaping material at the base of the fence, which burned on both sides.

“Damage is estimated at $500,” Daloise said. “The cause is still under investigation.”

While the member was wrapping up the fence fire call, dispatch received a report of a MVA at the corner of Stanley and Vernon Streets.

“The accident involved two vehicles with relatively minor damage and one patient that needed to be assessed by EHS,” Daloise said.

“The accident is under investigation by the Nelson Police Department.”

Daloise said there was one injury as a result of the motor vehicle incident.

Friday, shortly after noon time, a report came in of a smell of rotten eggs in the 800 Block of Victoria Street.

Daloise said an excavator had struck a FortisBC gas line.

“Upon arrival of the first crew, a large vapour cloud was observed coming from the area that had been excavated,” Daloise said, adding the operator had followed procedure prior to digging by making a BC One Call.

“The first arriving crew’s primary objective was evacuation of the immediate area.

“This included the 800 block of Victoria Street in addition to the Herridge Lane location.”

Daloise said FortisBC crews attended to repair the damaged line and assist in determining the hazard.

“In consultation with Fortis technicians on site, it was deemed necessary to have Nelson Hydro disconnect the power to the adjacent properties,” he said.

“The purpose of this was to eliminate any ignition sources where explosive gas concentrations might occur.”

Daloise said as members dealt with the gas leak, Nelson Fire Rescue crews were alerted to a kitchen fire in the Rosemont district of Nelson.

“An “all member call out” including both career and auxiliary members was initiated to staff the two incidents,” Daloise said.

“On arrival, the resident had fled the house, closing the doors behind her. Two Firefighters entered the building to find that the fire had largely self-extinguished and only required light overhaul.”

Daloise said Friday Nelson Fire Rescue responded to the pair of incidents with two fire engines, one ladder truck and one utility vehicle.

“No injuries were reported as a result of this incident,” he said. “The causes of the incidents are still under investigation.”

Sunday, The duty officer responded to the incidents with one fire engine.
