Following a lopsided victory over the J. Lloyd Crowe Hawks in the Kootenay High School AAA Boy’s Basketball Zone Final, everything was coming up roses for the L.V. Rogers Bombers.

That was until the bill came in for the team to compete at the B.C. High School AAA Boy’s Basketball Championships in Langley.

However, everything is back on schedule as the Bombers are in Langley to battle the best beginning Wednesday against Sir Charles Tupper of Vancouver.

“I think the mood of the team is positive,” said Bomber head coach Jeremy Phelan, who has spearheaded the fundraising drive for the team.

“We realize that we’ve not had a full squad available all season long for any of our tournaments and therefore have not been able to play up to our full potential.

“However, we are heading in to the provincial tournament with a full healthy roster and have improved greatly each time we’ve gone away to tournaments.”

The Bombers face a tough road ahead as the 15th seeded team in the 16-team field.

Sir Charles Tupper is ranked second and are a very well coached team and well-organized team said Phelan.

“Our game is generally a slash and pound game,” Phelan explained. “We like to get the ball in the post, driving to the hoop, getting high percentage shots, and our opponent in foul trouble often.”

“So on paper their style of play is tough for us to stop but ours is equally as difficult especially if they’re not able to prepare for what we bring to the court,” added Phelan, spending the past two weeks reviewing video footage of the Bomber opponents.

This is the Bombers first foray into the AAA level since the B.C. Boy’s Basketball Association changed the divisions to start this season and the Quad category was added.

LVR has been a Double-A school for the past decade and a tournament participant for the past few under the guidance of former skipper Ross Naka.

To get to Langley the Bombers are thankful to many businesses for helping them during fundraising, including Tom Atkins at the Nelson and District Credit Union.

Others include Shambhala Music Festival, Lion’s Club of Nelson, Nelson and District Community Investment Program, Bibby Orthodontics, Kootenay Health Services, Dr. Lee Hutton, Dr. Brian Moulson, Alan Burch Law Corporation, Berg Lehmann Chartered Accountants and Business Advisors, Ms. Glenda Miller, Tim Pearkes Law Corporation, Safeway, Save-On-Foods and The Kootenay Co-op.
