The L.V. Rogers Bombers scored a sixth-place finish at the Kelowna Secondary Owls High School Girl’s Soccer Tournament Saturday in the Central Okanagan City.

The Bombers lost 3-2 in consolation play to Okanagan Mission of Kelowna.

“(Coaches) were very pleased with the way that the girls played,” said Jamie Spendlove.

“Being more structured and having majority of the possession in every game is a good sign of things to come. These girls finished fourth in provincials last year which they would like to improve on this year.”

Leading 1-0 on a stunning left footed thunder strike from winger Jesse Cooper, LVR once again dominated possession.

However, tired legs cost them three straight OKM goals — two from penalty shots and a free kick from outside the box.

LVR continued to have the run of play and got one back from a penalty shot scored by Erica Augsten to make the game 3-2.

Player of the game for LVR was Aroha Taiatini-Senechal.

The Bombers opened the tournament playing to a 1-1 draw against Salmon Arm.

Salmon Arm took a 1-0, scoring on their only shot of the game — a deep free kick.

LVR then took over the play, tying the game on a goal by captain Erica Augsten from the penalty spot.

“We were pleased with the performance and believed the score could have easily been 10-1 (for LVR),” Spendlove confessed.

Player of the game was Naomi Perkins.

LVR then shutout Mount Boucherie on goals by Perkins and Tara Yowek.

Player of the game was centerback Jena Wheeldon.

The Bombers then tied defending Single A provincial champions Immaculata 1-1.

LVR dominated possession again and went up early with a goal from Perkins.

The Bombers could have increased the margin but failed to get the insurance marker Immaculata evened the score from one of their only chances in the whole game in the final minutes of the game.

The result proved costly as the LVR failed to finish in the top four of the tournament.

Player of the game was Augsten.

LVR then edged St. Thomas Aquinas of Vancouver 1-0 to advance into the five-six playoff game.

Perkins scored the lone goal for the Bombers.

“The team is strong this year with a good core of the team participating in the Soccer Quest Regional Academy over the last two years working hard to improve and looking to gain on the five scholarships that have already been attained through this program in the last three years,” Spendlove explained.

Next up for the Bombers is the Mount Baker Wild tournament in Cranbrook April 11-12.
