Despite a heartbeaking 1-0 loss to rival J. Lloyd Crowe, the L.V. Rogers Bombers will still advance to the BC High School AA Girl’s Field Hockey Championships November 8-10 in Surrey.

LVR, the second seed coming out of the West Kootenay Zone, qualified for the provincial tournament following a lopsided 11-0 shellacking of Stanley Humphries Rockers Tuesday in Castlegar.

“A heartbreaking loss yes, but a brilliantly played game by the whole team as they proved to themselves that they are ready to compete at the provincials early next month in Surrey,” LVR coach Bruce Walgren said following Wednesday’s setback to the Hawks of Trail.

Walgren said following LVR’s  the semi final win, the Bombers were all tuned up for the show down with JL Crowe since Crowe had beaten the Bombers in both league games.

“This game was so intense you could tell that both teams were not going to give in even a little, as the Bomber defense held a very talented JL Crowe offense at bay,” Walgren said.

Walgren said LVR was bolstered by the play of rookie junior keeper Johanna Brochhagen, who really kept the Bombers alive.

He said however, late in the first half a lucky bounce for JL Crowe as the ball fell to a waiting Crowe forward as she pushed the ball through the Bomber Keeper legs, even though she got a piece of the ball it slowly made its way over the line, 1 – 0 Crowe.

Walgren said the second half played out much like the first as the Bombers absorbed the relentless Crowe attacks waiting to strike on the quick break.

“The Bombers did have several counter attacks with Hanna Quinn on a partial break away on a great pass from Shianne Michalchuck, and with only three minutes left in the second half the Bombers had two short corners and on the last one with 40 seconds left the ball beat the Trail goalie and rolled along the goal line until it hit something and bounced out instead of in,” he explained.

LVR had little trouble advancing to the final against the Rockers.

Walgren said LVR controlled the whole game from start to finish.

Hanna Quinn paced the attach scoring five times, with Faith Miesner adding a pair with singles going to Heather Potkins, Ella Peloso, Marisa Price and Shianne Michalchuck.

Keeper Rylee Zondervan recorded the shutout.
