Bomb threat forces evacuation of Rossland Courthouse

The Rossland Courthouse was evacuated Thursday afternoon after someone phoned in a bomb threat to the Crown Counsel Office in Nelson.

At approximately 2 p.m. an unknown male caller phoned the Crown Counsel Office and said there was a bomb at the courthouse.

Court was in session in Rossland and it was quickly determined that the threat was directed at the Rossland Provincial Courthouse.

The Trail RCMP Detachment was quickly notified and members immediately responded.

The Courthouse was safely evacuated, including the prisoners in custody.  Trail EHS and Fire Department was notified, setting up a command post a safe distance from the scene.

B.C. Sheriffs and Trail RCMP members teamed up and a search of building was conducted with negative results.

B.C. Sheriffs transported the five prisoners back to Trail Det.  Arrangements were later made between the Justice of the Peace, Crown Counsel and Defense Counsel regarding Release/Remand of the Prisoners.

The Court House remained closed for the rest of the day.

The Trail RCMP continue to investigate this criminal offence.  A similar Bomb Threat was made in the fall of 2011l also involving the Rossland Provincial Courthouse.

This previous occurrence, along with yesterday's offence, will be reviewed for persons of interest.
