Black Jack Ski Club in Rossland took the early lead following the second race on the Teck Kootenay Cup Cross Country Ski Series held last month in the Golden City.

Black Jack leads the seven-team field with 228 points.

Nelson Ski Club is second at 105 followed by Kimberley in third at 97, Toby Creek at 49 and Fernie at 48.

Black Jack topped Race Two with 131 points. Nelson was second at 61.

More than 100 skiers from Fernie, Golden, Invermere, Kimberley, Nelson, Rossland, and Slocan Valley as well as Vernon, Kelowna and south of the boarder Sandpoint and Spokane competed at the Black Jack event.

The trails were in good shape despite the low snowpack and rain the previous week, thanks to the grooming crew and volunteers.

Saturday races were individual classic with racers starting 15 seconds apart with tough waxing conditions. This race was used to select the zone 1 team for the 2020 BC Winter Games and Girls born in 2005 and 2006).

Sundays skate races were also individual start due to trail conditions in the stadium area.

The Teck Kootenay Cup Ski Series shifts to the East Kootenay later this month when Toby Creek hosts the Nipika/Toby Creek Loppet January 25-26 near Invermere.

In Kimberley, February 8-9, two races are scheduled before the series Teck Kootenay Cup Ski Series concludes February 7-8 at Nelson Nordic Apex Ski Trails south of Nelson.
