Vancouver-based Big John Bates, is coming to the Royal Inn April 16 for an evening of Southern Gothic Death Cult music.

Big John Bates is a band with an orchestral edge of “heavy-hearted cello weeping upright and come-hither guitars.”

Big John Bates is out spreading the word of their new full length album release, “From the Bestiary to the Leathering Room”.

“Bestiary” album features eight epic BJB songs and two covers (Black Soul Choir and the Passenger) in 34 intense minutes.

Bates leads a style they call Americana Noir that fuses alternative rock and orchestral folk/punk.

The lyrics examine anti-social behaviour, religious imagery, ghosts, family, addiction, death & betrayal. Mixed by David Carswell (Destroyer, New Pornographers, Teagan and Sara) the album was mainly recorded on board The Caleuche moored in Vancouver’s False Creek.

And fittingly the cover art is from Argentinian visionary Santiago Caruso (Pan’s Labyrinth).

Big John and upright bassist Brandy Bones have armed themselves with a new band (featuring drummer Ty-Ty and Justine Echo on cello).
