In Nelson alone, eight black bears were shot this season and another 10 were put down in the immediate regional district.

As well, five grizzlies have been relocated — but if they come back they won’t be given another chance.

The City of Nelson and the Regional District of Central Kootenay needs to step up to help save the lives of these magnificent animals, says a press release from the West Kootenay EcoSociety.

Kaslo enacted a bylaw in 2008 which prohibits leaving out ‘bear attractants,’ and the conservation officer now gets fewer calls to Kaslo.

On Nov. 22, the EcoSociety will join a delegation including Bear Aware, the Nelson City Police, conservation officer, the Ministry of Environment wildlife specialists and local bear biologists to ask the Nelson City council to pass a “bear bylaw.”

The bylaw would require residents to take simple precautionary measures to help keep bears outside the city limits and in the wilderness where they safely belong.
