BC Wildfire reports fire near Balfour

The BC  Wildfire Service is reporting on its website a fire near Balfour.

The BC Wildfire Service said the fire, which was reported Monday afternoon at a logging operation on the mountainside above Balfour known as Balfour Face, is .30 hectare in size and is believed to be human-caused.

BC Wildfire sent an initial attack crew of four firefighters to join with Balfour/Harrop Fire Department to battle the wildfire located approximately two kilometers northwest of the Balfour Ferry terminal. Members of the Balfour/Harrop department, who remained on scene until darkness to monitor the fire, returned back to the scene at 2:30 a.m.

Readers of The Nelson Daily said they observed two helicopters battling the wildfire Monday evening. BC Wildfire website said there are eight active fires in the Southeast Fire Centre.

BC Wildfire said currently six firefighters are on scene today to assist Balfour Fire Department with fighting this wildfire.

Meteorologists are expecting a hotter and drier-than-normal summer that most likely will bring a consistent threat of wildfires.

The past week has seen record-breaking temperatures, with the trend expecting to continue through June.

To help conserve water, the Regional District of Central Kootenay has put into place Stage 1 Water Conservation Measure as of June 1 for all water systems under the jurisdiction of the RDCK.

Stage 1 Water Conservation Measures include:

  • Watering of lawns (including new lawns), gardens, trees and shrubs ONLY between the hours of 7 p.m. to 10  a.m.
  • Watering using drip irrigation, a watering can, and or hand held hose is permitted at any time.
