Nelson native Wayne Naka was officially named the new president of the B.C. Senior Games during the recent competition held this past week in Langley.

And with the new president comes a new games as BC Seniors Games Society officially rebranded its annual multi-sport event as the 55+ BC Games starting in 2015 with the North Vancouver Games.

“The new 55+ BC Games will strive to maintain its leadership as the premier multi-sport event and become widely recognized among all 55+ British Columbians as being friendly, welcoming, supportive and transformative,” Naka said in a press release Sunday.

Naka, who lives in Nelson, is principal at an elementary school in Castlegar.

The new president has been extensively involved in sports throughout his lifetime as well as a coach in hockey and basketball.

The rebranding was made during the Closing Ceremony of the 2014 Games in Langley by MLA Rich Coleman, which ran from September 9-13.

“As we have seen over the last few days, the spirit and vitality of older British Columbians is nothing short of inspiring. This new branding aptly reflects B.C.’s culture of active, engaged citizens of all ages and backgrounds,” said Coleman.

June Parsons, BC Seniors Games Society Past President, echoed those remarks.

“We have been doing a lot of strategic planning about our past and vision for the future. Since their beginning in 1987 the BC Seniors Games have become a very successful multi-sport event in British Columbia,” Parsons said.

“However, looking forward to the next five years we learned that for the first time in history a majority of BC citizens will be aged 55 and older,” said June Parsons, BC Seniors Games Society Past President.”

The 55+ segment of society will drive many aspects of British Columbia’s collective lifestyle and continue to shatter old notions of what it means to age in a province that offers boundless opportunities to remain physically and socially active in one’s community.

There are growing expectations among all British Columbians that they will continue to live active, healthy lifestyles during their senior years.

The BC Seniors Games Society is uniquely positioned to serve this population as an organization created to promote physical, social and creative achievement through participation in friendly competition.

The BC Seniors Games Society will continue to operate with no changes to the Society, Zone structure or the product of the Games. The re-brand involves a new logo that is a stylized torch representing the people that embrace life, sport and friends within a multi-sport games environment.

The Langley BC Seniors Games included 25 sports, close to 3,900 participants and 1,300 volunteers.

The North Vancouver 2015 55+ BC Games are scheduled for August 25-29, 2015.
