BC government suspends K-12 schools indefinitely

Students from K-12 in province will receive extended time away from the classroom after Premier John Horgan announced Tuesday that BC elementary and secondary schools in the province will be closed indefinitely due to COVID-19.
Most students had been away from school since Friday due to Spring Break Holiday. The government said any schools not on spring break have been told to suspend classes indefinitely.
Minister of Education Rob Fleming said the COVID-19 pandemic is evolving quickly and is having an impact on BC, which forced the government to act to protect students.
Fleming said all students will receive a final mark for the current school year, in spite of what the government decides in the next months ahead.
Fleming said all Grade 12 students will graduate this year as well, Grade 10 and 11 student’s graduation assessments will be postponed.
The province has approximately 60 school districts around the province with an estimated 545,805 students.
Kootenay Lake School District, Boundary and Kootenay Columbia are part of the 60 in the province.
The Kootenay District serves a number of individual communities including Crawford Bay, Creston, Kaslo, Meadow Creek, Nelson, Salmo, Slocan, South Slocan, Winlaw, Wynndel and Yahk.
There are approximately 5400 students in the Kootenay Lake District affected by this decision.
