BC Coroners Service identifies Riondel man killed in cliff-diving accident

The BC Coroners Service has confirmed the identity of a man who died following a cliff-diving incident on Kootenay Lake near Gray Creek on (Monday) June 30 as Wyatt Earl Davidson, aged 25, from Riondel.

Davidson and a friend were cliff-diving into Kootenay Lake from a cliff about 10 metres high during the afternoon of the accident.

After a dive, the friend observed Davidson to be in trouble in the water. He went to assist him but was unable to get Davidson to shore.  

The body of Mr. Davidson was recovered from the lake on Monday (July 7) after search-and-recovery efforts involving an RCMP dive team, Nelson Search and Rescue, and Ralston and Associates recovery specialists from Idaho.

Davidson was found at a depth of about 40 metres, about three metres off shore.

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate this death.

Riondel man presumed to have drowned after diving accident on Kootenay Lake

RCMP dive team continues to search for a 25-year-old Riondel man presumed to have drowned in popular swimming spot on Kootenay Lake Monday.

Police were called to Star Valley Cliff on Kootenay Lake at 4:43 p.m. Two men were diving off the cliffs when one of them landed awkwardly in the water.

His diving buddy attempted to pull the friend to safety, but the unconscious swimmer slipped below the surface.

Police believe the man has drowned. He was familiar with the area and is described as an experienced diver.

The name is being held until next of kin has been notified.

RCMP Underwater Recovery team and Nelson Search and Rescue continue to recover the man’s body, believed to be in approximately 170 feet of water.
