The Southeast Fire Centre said in its monthly weather synopsis that a cool northwesterly flow that is typical of a La Nina pattern helped sets new record for the coolest mean monthly temperature in April.

(The Southeast Fire Centre said mean monthly temperature is the average of all the daily maximum and minimum values.)

“Two daily low temperature records were also set (April 13th and 14th), but the record monthly minimum temperature of minus 7.5 degrees Celsius from 1979 still stands,” the Southeast Fire Centre said in the monthly weather synopsis.

The Southeast Fire Centre said total monthly precipitation was below normal for the third month in a row, this time by almost 40%.

“Gusty winds are common under a prevailing northwesterly flow aloft due to greater vertical mixing of the atmosphere and this year average winds speeds were about 15% above historical normal,” Southeast Fire Centre said.

According to the Environment Canada website, cooler, wet weather will continue over the southeast part of the province, including the West Kootenay Boundary regions with rain in the forecast for the next week.

Temperatures will hover in the low to mid-teens with overnight lows dipping to 3 C next week.

The Farmer’s Almanac is calling for near-normal temperatures with more than average precipitation for April-May of 2022.
