Another grass fire scare, this time in Railtown

Government Road in Railtown was closed for part of Thursday afternoon while members of Nelson Police and Nelson Fire Rescue investigated a grass fire near the side of the shoulder.
The incident started when Nelson Fire Rescue was called to a report of a wildland fire on Government Road in the Railtown area of Nelson at 3:46 p.m.
Firefighters arrived to see three members of the public battling the aggressive grass fire with tools they had on hand.
“Nelson Fire and Rescue members were able to immediately supply water and complete the extinguishment,” the Nelson Fire Rescue media release said.
“The fire was stopped at a size of 3 meters by 4 meters.”
Nelson Fire Rescue said Government Road was closed for approximately 30 minutes to allow NPD officers and Fire Rescue for fire overhaul and investigation.
Nelson Fire and Rescue would like to thank the three individuals who made a quick call to the fire department and took decisive action to prevent this incident from escalating.
The grass fire comes on the heels of the Southeast Fire Centre reminding the public of a number of restrictions within the region.
The restrictions are to help prevent human-caused wildfires, making the following activities prohibited:
- campfires (as defined in the Wildfire Regulation: www.gov.bc.ca/wildfirelegislation)
- the burning of waste or other materials
- stubble or grass fires of any size over any area
- the use of fireworks, sky lanterns, tiki torches, chimineas, burning barrels or burning cages of any size or description
- the use of binary exploding targets (e.g. for target practice)
- the use of air curtain burners (forced-air burning systems)
The BC Wildfire Service is continually monitoring conditions, and this prohibition may be expanded or rescinded as needed. It will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified.
