Nelson Police are asking any witnesses or people with information to a gruesome attack of a middle-aged woman near the 1100 block of West Innes Street Wednesday to contact police immediately said Detective Constable David Laing in a media release Thursday.

The incident began when at approximately 2 p.m. Wednesday when Nelson Police responded to the suspected report of a hit-and-run motor vehicle accident in the Rosemont district.

When officers arrived, along with BC Ambulance, Nelson Fire and Rescue, Nelson RCMP, they found an unconscious, heavily bleeding and severely injured 54-year-old female in the middle of the roadway.

The woman’s seven-month-old grandson was found nearby, unharmed, in a stroller.

Prior to the arrival of emergency services personnel; a neighbour had transported a 48-year-old male from the scene of the hit-and-run to Kootenay Lake Hospital.

“The man had originally provided information to bystanders that both he and the woman had been struck by a passing vehicle,” Constable Laing explained.

“(However) subsequent investigation by police determined that the 48-year-old male attacked the woman, who was visiting family from Alberta.”

Laing said an edged weapon was used in the attack and severe injuries were inflicted to the woman, who is currently resting in local hospital.

Police believe the assailant did not know the victim and there had been no previous interaction between the man and woman.

Laing said the man is currently in police custody and the Nelson Police Department is working with Crown Council and Nelson Mental Health personnel on this matter.

Any witnesses or persons with information are encouraged to contact the Nelson Police Department at 250-354-3919.
