Mount Sentinel administration posted a notice on its website Tuesday evening assuring parents its safe to send children to the high school for the final day of classes.

Mount Sentinel had an emergency evacuation at 2:45 p.m. Friday, facilitated after consulation with the RCMP, Nelson PD and provincial Violent Threat Risk Assessment experts.

The school was closed Monday and Tuesday.

An 18-year-old man, who appeared in court in Castlegar Monday, is scheduled to make another appearance Wednesday in Nelson.

Jeff Jones, Superintendent/CEO for School District 8 (Kootenay Lake) said Mount Sentinel  will be open for students with dismissal set for noon.

Students who choose to attend on this day will have the opportunity to clean out their lockers and say their farewells.

School Administration will be working with the Grad Planning Committee to plan a graduation event.

More details regarding this will follow once the committee has met.

Here is the posted notice from administration staff, Principal Glen Campbell and Vice Principal, Shellie Maloff:

Please be assured that it is safe to send your children to school on Wednesday for the last day.

We feel fortunate to have three members from Safer Schools Together with us for the remainder of the week.  They are typically deployed to schools at times like this to assist students and staff in returning to their normal routines.  We are also working on putting together some resources to share with parents as we know a number of you have expressed concern about how your children might be feeling.
We know that there is a lot of misinformation out there which is also contributing to uneasiness.  It is important at times like this to seek out the facts and to help in dispelling myths and mistruths.

Please do not hesitate to seek clarity by checking our school website or by contacting school administration.

Respectfully,
Glen & Shellie
