Aaron Abrosimoff scored three times to spark the Nelson U18 Selects to a 5-3 victory over Oso Negro on opening night of the Men’s Open Soccer League at the Lakeside Pitch.

“I believe we made the statement we were looking to make,”  said Selects coach Chris Parenteau.

“However, that was just one good game.  Next week we play the Hume InnKeepers, Oso Negro’s rival, and they will be very difficult.”

Parenteau, back coaching since taking eight years off from the sidelines, was optimistic opening the season against the Men’s Open Indoor Champs challenging his players to make a statement in our opening Men’s League game.

“Our first game is against the Indoor Champions,” he said. “Let’s catch them by surprise and show the rest of the league that we mean business this year.”

However, the start did not go well as Oso Negro twice held one goal leads.

“I thought that conceding the first goal would completely deflate our team,” said Parenteau, “and that we might lose the confidence that we had started the game with.”

But Abrosimoff scored a natual hat-trick to give the Selects a 3-2 advantage at halftime.

The U18’s started the second half the same way they started the first, pressing high and attacking hard.

Central attacking midfielder, Jonah Thiele, scored an immaculate volley from a beautiful cross by right back, Jack McKimm, to make the game 4-2.

Oso Negro responded by winning a free kick on the edge of the U18’s penalty box, from where Whitecaps Kootenay Academy Head Coach and Nelson Youth Soccer Technical Director made no mistake, slotting his shot into the top left corner, bringing the game back to a one-goal game.

However, the U18’s team captain and defensive central midfielder secured the U18’s victory by skillfully lobbing the ball over the approaching Oso Negro’s goal keeper to a final score of 5-3.

The U18 Nelson Selects play their next game against the Hume InnKeepers on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m. at the Lakeside Fields.

Hume opened the season with a 3-1 win over Old Dogs.

In the other game Tuesday the Old Dogs meet Oso Negro.
