Castanet drone gets grounded by fire officials

An Okanagan news website, Castanet.net, got into a little hot water after flying a drone over a a wildfire near Peachland.

Fire officials stopped the drone saying flight could significantly compromise helicopters in the area and distract crews on the ground.

According to Castanet News Editor, Trevor Rockcliff, the drone was only in the air for a for a minute or two, before he brought down.

Transport Canada controls the use of drones and issues Special Flight Operating Certificates for approved operations.

Transport Canada said the permits for drones in BC has risen from six in 2007 to 178 in 2013.
