The Winlaw school’s environmental education program facilitates experiential learning and develops values of stewardship through local resources, sustainable education tools and diverse habitats.

Primary learning opportunities take place at the Winlaw Regional Nature Park, located one km north of Winlaw Elementary School. Students walk weekly to the park to learn in an environment which provides nature trails and boardwalks weaving though forest and marshes.

The vision is to have an open structure which will have information kiosks and interactive learning tools with storage capacity for desks which are used to facilitate group work, presentations and nature studies.

Teachers would receive professional development and have access to field study kits to take on nature study outings. Field trips to other habitats provide learning experiences for students to compare and appreciate diverse natural environments.

The Old Growth Trail, north of Nelson, hosts interpretive signs explaining the surrounding ecosystems and wildlife. Kokanee Creek Provincial Park hosts educational tours along the Kokanee Salmon spawning channel as well as an experiential learning center featuring local plants and wildlife with an emphasis on conservation.
