Campers out at Kokanee Creek Park will benefit this summer from the hard work of over 140 French Immersion students. On May 16th, Grades 6-8 students from Trafalgar rolled up their sleeves and pulled weeds at the well-liked destination, learning all about the importance of identifying and removing invasive species to help keep nature in balance.

The day was a collaboration between many community groups including, the Central Kootenay Invasive Species Society (CKISS), Friends of Kootenay Lake (FOKL) Stewardship Society, Wildsight, Kokanee Creek Nature Center and the Kootenay Lake School District SD8.

This event, titled Protect the Kootenays Environmental Education Day at Kokanee was a great success. Each community educator group led a learning station where the students had the unique opportunity to learn about their local environment while giving back to their community at the same time.

Students engaged in learning about both plant and aquatic invasive species, tested water and discussed how pollution in the food chain affects our water quality and ecosystem health, played a scavenger hunt to learn about biodiversity and birded with an expert ‘birder’, who introduced them to local birds and listened to their unique bird calls on an ipad. And don’t forget the bags and bags of invasive weeds they pulled!

Students were also able to practise their French language skills during this great community-building day as they moved from station to station. “It was so great to have all the French speaking students and teachers together,” said Vanessa Finnie, Curriculum Support Teacher responsible for French Immersion in the District.
