Stores To Shores Weekly Update:

Having bounced back after last week’s tremendous wind and rain storm, it’s a big week on the Stores To Shores Downtown Revitalization site.

Crews with Maglio Installations had to undertake some significant damage control after the downpour and near-gale.

“It’s been a wild week here in Nelson,” says Mayor Deb Kozak, “we’ve had not one but two natural disasters, if you include the Duhamel/Sitkum fire. Our City crews and Maglio’s have been pushed to the limit.”

As of today, the 300 block of Hall Street is closed to vehicle traffic. As well, crews will be removing the stairs alongside Finleys. That means all pedestrian access will be limited to the west side of Hall Street.

Mayor Kozak says with traffic re-routes now in place to make way for major safety improvements to the corner of Hall and Vernon, and vastly improved access to the Nelson and District Community Complex, drivers and business owners are being asked to be patient and carry on as best they can.”

“It’s going to be a congested few weeks traffic-wise,” says the Mayor, “but we’re all in this together, and we should be through the tough stuff within two weeks.”

Everyone is being reminded to add some extra travel time to their day when entering the Stores To Shores area in order to you reach your destination on time, and safely.

The closure of the Hall/Vernon intersection is expected to last 12-14 days, then the crossing will be open to single lane of traffic.

Access to the NDCC will be available from the back of the complex, on Cedar Street, off Front. Please refer to the attached traffic reconfiguration map — the same one that went out last week — for further details.

There’s been considerable progress, despite the storm’s impact on the Stores To Shores site.

Paving is to begin this week on the 500 block, in front of IODE Park and the new Social Steps. The 500 block is really starting to take shape. The IODE deck will be completed and a new staircase put into place, connecting Herridge Lane to Victoria Street.

Sidewalks and curbs are being poured, and that will make way for the first layer of asphalt. Sidewalks will also be cut to give them a unique design and eliminate any possible cracking over Nelson’s famous four seasons.

The 400 block will be prepped for curb installation, sidewalks and completion of the utility work in the Vernon intersection.

A note as well, that the work done on Vernon Street west of Ward, Monday was Ministry of Highways maintenance, and not affiliated with the Stores to Shores project.
