The numbers are in and Kootenay businesses got involved in a big way during Small Business Month this year.

Community Futures Central Kootenay joined forces with other organizations throughout the region to deliver a whole host of events, workshops and seminars in Nelson, Castlegar and Creston.

Nelson business owners came out in force to attend a “Grow Your business” workshop, co-hosted by the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce and the Women’s Enterprise Centre.

The interactive workshop focused on providing tips and tools for businesses to successfully navigate a growth phase.

A “Target Marketing” workshop aimed at both new and existing businesses was also offered. Participants learned to define their customer base and identified some cost effective ways to reach them.

The Nelson and Area Economic Development Partnership sponsored area businesses to attend a variety of workshops at a reduced rate of $25 all month long. A total of 188 new and existing business owners took part in small business month courses and seminars throughout the Central Kootenay region.

Approximately 98 per cent of all businesses in British Columbia are small businesses.

“Small businesses are vitally important to rural areas,” said Paul Wiest, general manager of Community Futures. “They drive local economies. We’ve been operating in the area for over 25 years, and have built up a strong track record of knowledge, service and understanding the needs of area businesses.”

A small business expert is available every Thursday in Nelson for free one-on-one sessions with existing and new business owners.

“If you have a business issue you want to discuss, whether it’s human resources, marketing or growth, or even if you have a business idea you want to toss around, we’re here to help,” said Wiest.
