Katrina Fontaine completed successful surgery this past week to help fight a rare genetic condition affecting the collagen in her body called Ehlers Danlos Syndrome.

The neurosurgery is the first of three the pediatric social worker will have outside Canada to help with her quality of life.

These surgeries run in the hundreds of thousands of dollars for the daughter of a former City of Nelson Hydro Department employee and Mountain Spirit Triathlon club member, Roger Fontaine.

Which is why family, friends and City of Nelson employees are banding together to help raise funds at a Beer and Burger Silent Auction Fundraiser January 24 at Finley’s Irish Bar and Grill.

Tickets are $15 for the event that begins at 6 p.m.

Information on Katrina can be found at the YouCaring website

Anyone wanting to simply donate to the cause can made a contribution through CIBC account 7513135, Transit number 00070.

Here’s Katrina’s blog on her Facebook page:

ALL pre-op pain gone… no tingling, numbness, burning and I can FINALLY raise my arm above shoulder level after a decade of not being able to. SOOOOO amazing… I can’t wait to see the results after the next surgery on Monday . I had a treatment on my stomach to try and help with getting my stomach moving and I was able to eat more solid food than I have in almost two years… I’m loving life.. I’m so happy! I can’t wait til I can stand up normally, and walk, and talk, and swallow, and feel my feet, and feel when someone stabs me with a safety pin… all in time, all in time. I would not be in this position without the help and support of everyone out there and I cannot say thank you enough. You guys are the reason that I’m getting better and more amazing news is that the surgeon in Calgary pissed off my surgeon so much down here in Maryland that he is going to do an interview for the Global Calgary news story… all of his staff are so happy… we’re all happy happy and I promise that it’s not just the good drugs I got running through my veins . I do hope to update my blog today… with all this news and more pics but I’m definitely really worn out but I just want to cry happy tears all day long cause I’m that happy!
