The Selkirk Pro-Musica Concert Series presents Trio con Brio

The Selkirk Pro-Musica Concert Series season continues with audiences treated to a performance by Trio con Brio, a concert of all things “reeds” featuring music for oboe, clarinet and bassoon.
Beth Orson, oboe and Julia Lockhart, bassoon, are both members of the Vancouver Symphony woodwind section and will be joined by Nelson resident, Nicola Everton, clarinet, formerly of the VSO Saturday (October 8) at 7:30 p.m. at the St. Saviour’s Pro-Cathedral (Silica & Ward).
When these three musicians performed together in the VSO, they enjoyed travelling the world together as musical ambassadors, including a tour of South Korea and China, culminating in a performance at the Beijing International Music Festival.
They also performed on violinist James Ehnes’ 2008 recording with the orchestra, which received incredible critical acclaim and won a Juno and a Grammy award for that year.
In their pursuit of music, all three attended world-renowned music schools. Both Everton and Lockhart obtained degrees from the Curtis Institute of Music, Orson from the Oberlin Conservatory. They are devoted educators with teaching positions at UBC, the National Youth Orchestra and the Valhalla Institute.
All three share a deep passion for chamber music. As Everton points out, “Playing in a wind section is a very intimate experience. We sit close to each other, listen to each other’s tuning and phrasing and above all, we breathe together. It’s natural to want to create a harmonious and reedy sound together as a trio. The repertoire is fantastic as well.”
The trio will perform selections specifically written for this combination by Mozart, French composers Milhaud, Tomasi and Ibert as well as a few other surprises, such as a trio by Canadian composer Bill Douglas that includes rock and bebop styles.
