With the countdown to the end of the Whitewater Ski Resort season on, Selkirk College students in the Ski Resort Management & Operations (SROAM) Program are inviting fresh air lovers to take one last shot at amazing.

The Nelson-based SROAM Program is in its 40th year of providing the education and training for bright ski industry futures. As part of semester-end assignments, first-year students are once again organizing the SROAMazing Race that takes place on Sunday, March 28. A full day of activities includes a scavenger hunt, costume contest, skin-to-win race and video contest. With a deep list of local sponsors, the day also carries promise of plenty of terrific prizes.

“In year’s past, the SROAMazing Race has brought the community together and that spirit has never been more important than now,” says first-year SROAM Program student Max Jones.“It has also created a great opportunity for students to gain knowledge about the responsibilities of creating an event like this as we prepare for careers in the industry.”

This year’s SROAMazing Race is adding environmental awareness to the day’s activities with focus on POW (Protect Our Winters) Canada, a national organization with a mission to turn passionate outdoor people in effective climate advocates. All money raised will go towards POW’s efforts towards sustainability of the outdoor industry.

“Without snow, we obviously wouldn’t be able to continue participating in these beloved sports, so it’s important to do our job as a collective to create a change,” says Jones.

The activities run between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. The skin-to-win race will take place on Sluice Box, where students encourage people to bring their skins and get their game face on. The annual scavenger hunt will be set up for teams of two all over the mountain and participants can arrive anytime to take part in the hunt. The video contest is looking to hear from people in two minutes or less about what they are doing in your daily lives to help protect our winters. Don’t forget your costumes, there are some sweet prizes for the best dressed.

“The day will feature all of the activities and with the help of some wonderful sponsors, the SROAM team will be giving out some spectacular prizes too,” says Jones. “Last year, COVID-19 unfortunately put a halt on the 2020 class’s race, so we are feeling very eager to get things rolling again. Alongside the province’s regulations, the class has ensured that all COVID protocols are up to standard and that participants can be confident in their health and safety during the day.”

Participants can register and find more information by heading to the SROAMazing Race 2021 Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SroamazingRace)or by emailing SROAMazingrace2021@gmail.com.
