Selkirk College is providing emerging and established writers the opportunity to read, write, perform, and run a literary magazine in two evening classes, CWRT 100 and 200, which begin on September 6 and 8.

“Creative writing courses are about a lot more than writing,” says course instructor Leesa Dean, whose short story collection Waiting for the Cyclone was recently nominated for a Trillium Award. “They’re about self-empowerment through writing and creating community. The skills you learn in those classes—editing techniques, the ability to stretch your boundaries—those skills are universally desired in both personal and professional spheres.”

CWRT 100 is an introduction to fiction, non-fiction and poetry that will run Tuesday evenings for 15 weeks (September 8 to December 8). CWRT 200 is a more advanced course for writers who are either working on a manuscript or have taken Selkirk College’s first year courses and will run on Tuesday evenings. Both are open to the general public.

Another exciting opportunity is the chance to contribute to the Black Bear Review, a new literary journal run by Selkirk College’s Creative Writing and Digital Arts & New Media students.

“Last year was the foundational year for this project,” says Dean, who oversaw the student-led editorial teams. “It was a great success. The students learned so much about putting together a publication and working as a team. We plan to expand the online site this year and hope that incoming students will bring their fresh ideas to the table.”

To register for either CWRT 100 or 200, call Selkirk College’s Admissions department at 250.365.1233 (extension 21233). Both courses are university transferrable and open to full-time students, part-time students and community learners.
