Bikes Not Pipes is taking to the streets starting at noon in front of Nelson Civic Theatre on (Saturday) May 2 for the second annual Critical Mass Bike Ride.

The ride starts at noon and will travel through Nelson streets to a rally in Lakeside Park at about 1 p.m.

The theme for this year’s rally is “Change the government in Ottawa”.

“It’s really important for people to start thinking ahead to the upcoming election and planning to vote out leaders that aren’t interested in climate justice or the environment” says MA Murphy, one of the organizers.

“We’re pretty sure lots of bike riders in the Kootenays will jump on their bikes/skateboard/etc. to ride for this cause,” she said.

The volunteer Bikes Not Pipes group is asking everyone to bring signs, noisemakers, loud voices, music, banners and dress up to make the ride another great and exciting event.

“Across Canada people are mobilizing to get rid of the Harper Conservatives,” says Keith Wiley of Kootenays for a Pipeline-Free BC.

“We want to whip up some excitement for this, and get more young people, and old people like me, voting.” He says.

One of the slogans for the Critical Mass Ride is “Be Radical. VOTE!”  The election is scheduled for October 19th, but could come much earlier.

Cycling and environmental activists have been holding critical mass bike rides around world to push for more attention to healthy, non-fossil fuel transportation, like bikes.
