In conjunction with Earth Day (April 22), locals joined together as part of Parachutes for the Planet, youth-inspired collective art project illustrating concern for climate change.

Parachutes can be seen as “safety nets” and when displayed together they transform into powerful messages of strength, hope and communal determination.

The 2-dimensional parachutes are brightly painted and usually made from an old sheet.

Some included:

  • 15 parachutes on display, made by members of the community from Kaslo to Castlegar to Nelson.
  • Parachutes are also being made by several local schools, including Rosemont and Salmo Elementary Schools.
  • Other schools who participated include J.V. Humphries in Kaslo, Kinnaird Elementary, and Mt Sentinel Secondary.
  • The large parachute that is being played with was made by The Schoolhouse Early Care & Learning Centre.
  • Community parachute painting projects were organized over Earth Day weekend by Judith and Kat from Kootenai Art Therapy Institute.
  • Community parachutes were painted last September at The Langham in Kaslo and The Kootenay Gallery in Castlegar.

These parachutes will be joining other from across BC at a display in front of the BC Legislative Assembly on May 13.

They also were part of a Canada-wide display in Ottawa last October. This was the first group display in Nelson.
