he 2016 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet National Regatta is in full swing at Portsmouth Harbour in Kingston, Ontario for the past three days, with 18-year old Cadet Kaden Ellis from Nelson, BC as a fierce competitor.

He was selected as one of the top 50 sea cadet sailors from across the country to participate in this prestigious competition.

Prior to selection for this competition, many of the cadets spent their summer either sailing or instructing at one of the Sea Cadet Training Centres across Canada, where they were able to develop their skills in preparation for the event.

Time at the Regatta began with two days of instruction with Thomas Fogh and Jacob Webster, Olympic-level sailing coaches, to give each of these youth additional training prior to the competition.

Summer training for the cadets has completed, they will all return to their home units and continue instructing and training with their local cadet corps.  These senior cadets will continue to inspire younger cadets with the skills and knowledge that they have acquired.

When asked about what encouragement he would give to a younger cadet who is about to join sailing, Kaden said “anyone who puts their mind to it can be successful, it really is a level playing field.”

Sea Cadet National Race Organizer, Lieutenant (Navy) Dwight Koshman, congratulates those cadets who have made it to Nationals, “being one of theprovincial representatives in the top 25 boats competing here is a feat in itself and the team should be proud.”

The Canadian Cadet Program promotes physical fitness, citizenship, and leadership through unique and challenging experiences.

The cadet program is open to all youth between the ages of 12 – 18 years old in communities all across the country. To find the unit closest to you and to join (there are no registration fees), please visit our website.
