Nelson Scottish Country Dancers host Open House

Nelson Scottish Country Dancers have been dancing for more than 40 years.
Scottish Country Dancing, the social dancing of Scotland, includes lively jigs and reels and elegant Strathspeys. This dancing is closely related to contra dancing and square dancing. It is not highland dancing.
Monday, September 12, the Nelson Scottish Country Dancers are holding an Open House at Central School Gym from 7-9 p.m.
All are invited to come for an introduction to the fun of Scottish Country Dancing. This event is free. No previous dance experience is needed and you don’t need a partner. Information about our weekly basic dance class, starting Monday, September 19th, will be available at the Open House.
The Nelson group is affiliated with the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society (RSCDS), which has headquarters in Edinburgh and dance groups around the world. Our affiliation gives us access to the latest dances and music, and an easy introduction to the locals when we travel in Canada or abroad.
Our teacher, Kathy Chapman, says:
“I just love this dance form; the music, the patterns. And I can go just about anywhere and dance the same dances. Instant friends.”
One of our newer dancers, Nancy Macek, comments, “Joining the Scottish Country Dance group has been a great pleasure. The music, the learning and the camaraderie make each session enjoyable. The experienced dancers are energetic, skilled and committed to learning and they have freely and enthusiastically supported me as a beginner.”
People of all backgrounds are welcome to attend the Open House. You don’t need to be Scottish! Please bring soft shoes and a water bottle. Kilts are optional!
