Thanks to a tremendous response to the Nelson Public Library’s recent survey, a draft of the Library’s new 5-Year Strategic Plan has been prepared. As a next step to this important process, the Library is now seeking input on the draft.

“Nearly 900 people answered our survey, including a special survey for teens,” said Chief Librarian June Stockdale. “Now, we’re hoping to see strong community engagement in reviewing our draft Strategic Plan.”

Community consultation is key in achieving the Library’s goals towards creativity and knowledge creation, literacy and lifelong learning, and digital resources and training.

The survey asked about collections, programs, hours, staff, barriers to use, and a wish-list for the future. Partner organizations in the community were also surveyed.

A desire for more hours, more space for activities, and more quiet study rooms were some of the themes that appeared, and there was a lack of awareness about the Library’s online offerings. The responses were “extremely useful in mapping our future,” said Stockdale, who noted the business community’s generosity in contributing to the prize draw.

The draft is available for public comment from November 18 until December 6 and can viewed online at nelsonlibrary.ca, or a print version can be picked up at the Library during regular hours.
