The West Kootenay EcoSociety will open the 2018 Downtown Nelson Local Market on Wednesday, June 13 in its new location on the recently renovated Hall St., right off of Baker Street.

This is the ninth year in a row that this market has been in operation. The market will run each Wednesday from 9:30 am to 3 p.m. through to September 26, offering an amazing mix of local produce, plants, prepared foods, body care, and hand-made arts and crafts. Customers can rest assured that they are supporting the local economy due to the fact that 80% of each vendor’s wares must be made locally made to be sold at this market. In addition all the farmers at this event, 14 in total, grow what they sell so you are truly supporting our local food security system which is one of the EcoSociety’s main mandates.

“As I go into my seventh year in this position I am thrilled to see that the EcoSociety downtown market is thriving and very popular with the public,” said EcoSociety’s Markets and Events Director, Jesse R. Woodward.

“People really seem to love the central location and fun vibe of this market”.

Woodward said the 2018 Downtown Local Market will now have some wonderful new amenities like a public bathroom, water fountain and seating area in the new IODE Park that is right above the Hall St. Plaza.

“Customers will also really appreciate the quality and diversity of the offerings at this market, especially in combination with Baker Street’s amazing retail selection.”

Woodward said there are some new vendors this year and many long-time favourite vendors serving up all kinds of amazing crafts and foods.

The market is once again generally organized into product sections that should make it easier for customers to navigate the market and find what they need. Seasonal fruits and vegetables from the region will compliment local eggs and honey. Crafts will include hand-made hats, pottery and glass work, locally-made clothing and jewellery, and an array of body and home care products. There is, of course, a great selection of ready-to-eat foods to choose from including fresh crepes, soft yogurts, bake goods, tacos, local BBQ sausages, pad thai, Tamil cuisine  and much more.

The EcoSociety also runs the Saturday Cottonwood Community Market at Cottonwood Falls Park which runs until October 13, and MarketFest, the summer street festival events that take place this year on July 27 and August 24.
