The Nelson Sea and Air Cadets would like to thank the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Lions Club, both the Nelson and Salmo branches of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Nelson and District Rod and Gun Club and the Nelson Road Kings for their ongoing support.

It is with the help of these organizations that the cadet program thrives in Nelson.

In April, the Nelson Sea and Air cadet units training switched to an online program due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Both 81 Hampton Grey V.C. Sea Cadets and 561 Osprey Air Cadets usually gather once a week at their respective parade halls.

The Nelson Sea Cadets, who usually meet on Thursday nights, have been connecting through weekly check-ins via email and phone calls with their Commanding Officer Lieutenant (N) Melissa Townsend.

The Sea Cadet Annual Ceremonial Review will be held in the fall and achievements will be recognized at a Commanding Officers parade this September. Notably, Chief Petty Officer Second Class Hugh Cho and Chief Petty Officer First Class Kane Cho who will be leaving the sea cadet corps after having completed an amazing 7 years in the cadet program. Congratulations!

The Nelson Air Cadets, who usually meet on Friday nights, have been meeting via Zoom with their Commanding Officer Major Kevin DeBiasio for check-ins and optional activities. On June 19, they held their Annual Ceremonial Review virtually in order to celebrate their accomplishments from the past year and to present awards to deserving cadets.

The usual in-person summer training was replaced by virtual activities that were available to all cadets. Cadets and adult staff that were scheduled to work at summer training centres are running these activities from their home towns.

The Nelson Air and Sea Cadet units are looking forward to an exciting new training year starting this September and are always welcoming new recruits.

The officers and sponsoring committees of both units have been busy planning fun and exciting activities for the upcoming year, including sailing on beautiful Kootenay Lake for the Sea Cadets and the Air Cadets experiencing the thrill of flight.

Both units are actively involved in community service with local groups, such as the Royal Canadian Legion and the Lions Club. The cadets also learn leadership skills by planning activities and generally learning to work together as a group to achieve goals they set for their units.

The cadet program has a reputation for developing in youth the attributes of good citizenship and strong leadership.

The Cadet program is for youth is between the ages of 12 and18. For more information, please contact:
