Kootenay Kids Society has been teaming up with the local Scotiabank branch in Nelson through the summer with the Kootenay Kids Lemonade Stand at the corner of Ward and Baker Streets in the Heritage City.

The team is hosting another Lemonade Stand Sale Wednesday (August 19) between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. outside the Scotiabank Branch in Nelson.

“We met with the Branch Manager, Sharlene McKie, (and) it was decided to go with the Lemonade Stand & Bake Sale idea on alternate Wednesday Market days, and involve children,” said Janet Leahy of the Kootenay Kids Society.

“The biggest thing for us is that for every dollar we’ve raised, the Scotiabank will be matching with funds from their ‘Bright Futures’ program to a maximum of $5000.”

Kootenay Kids Society is a charitable, community-based, multi-service, non-profit organization serving the needs of children, families and caregivers in Nelson and regionally.

“Our experienced and committed staff work very hard to prevent or reduce the effects of family vulnerability on children, promote healthy early childhood social, emotional and cognitive development,” Leahy said.

“We raise awareness of child-related issues, concerns, and priorities within our community.  Our goal is to help our clients achieve their best potential through a variety of direct and indirect supports.”

Some of the programs include prenatal and postnatal support, physio and occupational therapy, licensed childcare and subsidy assistance, toy lending and parent resource libraries, drop-in play groups, parenting classes, nutrition and cooking classes, food voucher programs, Aboriginal programs, and a variety of support groups for vulnerable parents.

Leahy said the Society is getting close, thanks to generous donations from local businesses in the area.

However, the Society is looking to make one more big push Wednesday, selling lemonade and baked goods outside EcoSociety Market at 400 Block of Baker Street.

“We are getting closer to the maximum match from Scotiabank but not close enough and the staff at Scotiabank Nelson really want to present us with a cheque for $5000.”
