Tyler Scott, of Blewett,  graduated with an Associate of Arts degree in Psychology from Selkirk College this spring, and now he has even one more reason to be proud: winning the Ike Barber Transfer Award of $5000, to be distributed over two years.

Awarded to 100 university-transfer students each year, this scholarship is intended to reward academic excellence, as well as contributions to community and school by helping offset the costs associated with moving from a rural region, such as the West Kootenay-Boundary, to an urban centre to finish a degree.

Scott was able to complete the first two years of his four-year degree at home, for a fraction of the cost.  His goal is to complete a PhD in anthropology and then “do research abroad, improve people’s lives, and possibly teach at a university.”

“I would like to inspire and help students learn, just like the professors at Selkirk did for me,” Scott said of his Selkirk College experience.

Scott also won the $2,000 University of Victoria transfer scholarship where he is currently enrolled.
