Hume Elementary proved to be top-notch in capturing the Nelson Fire Rescue Services’ annual Fire Drill Competition.

While all school in the region scored high on the rating scale, Hume Elementary came out on top to capture the Fire Drill Competition and a $300 donation from insurance agencies, Kootenay Insurance Service, BCAA, RHC Insurance and Poulin’s Insurance.

Properly exiting a home or building during a fire is not as simple as it sounds.

Nelson Fire Department urges the public to plan it ahead of time and practice with your family.

Stay low if there’s smoke, have a meeting place to do “roll-call”, ensure no-one goes back inside, and call 9-1-1 from a cellphone or from a neighbour’s phone.

Also plan what to do if your path is blocked by fire.

Nelson Fire Rescue Services congratulates Hume’s students and thanks the local home insurance agents for their support.

Anyone who has questions about fire exit planning is encouraged to call the fire hall at 352-3103.
