Household hazardous waste roundup coming soon

Time is getting close to get rid of hazardous waste in the Regional District of Central Kootenay.

The RDCK is hosting another opportunity for residents to dispose of toxic hazardous materials hiding in and around the basement.

This is a free disposal for residential household hazardous waste and is open to all residents of the RDCK and municipalities. Industrial and commercial wastes are not accepted at these locations.

The date for Nelson residents is Sunday, September 7 at the Nelson Leafs Bottle Depot near Nelson Ford from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Castlegar is also hosting a drop-off at the District Community Complex from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 6.

In Salmo, the date is Saturday, September 27 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the recycling depot a the Curling Club.

Household hazardous waste is any waste in the home that is considered to be dangerous or that you are unsure of, including any leftover household product that is marked flammable, corrosive, explosive or poison.

Common examples are pesticides, varnishes, paints, cleaners, and batteries.

These products are harmful to humans, animals or the environment if not handled properly and should not be put in the garbage or poured into a drain and they should be stored away from children.
