Nelson coffee culture is joining forces with Columbia Basin Alliance for Literacy (CBAL) for the first annual Lattes for Literacy Week. This special event uses our universal love of coffee to raise funds and awareness for community literacy initiatives.

Kicking off on World Book Day, April 23, Lattes for Literacy Weekencourages Nelsonites to drink lots of coffee! Each day one of the participating cafés will donate a portion of their coffee sales to CBAL Nelson in support of free literacy programs and events in our community. Programs like Mother Goose, Tech Time for Seniors, Adult Literacy Tutoring and English Classes for Newcomers are all offered at no cost to participants.

Railtown Coffeehouse, No6 Coffee, Empire Coffee and Oso Negro Café are all stops on the coffee trail.

“Each café has a host day,” explains Community Literacy Coordinator Joan Exley.

“As you visit and buy your coffee, staff will punch or initial your bookmark to show that you’ve been on the Lattes for Literacytrail” says Exley. “At the end of Lattes for Literacy Week, fill out the bottom of your bookmark with your contact info and drop it in our mailbox at CBAL Nelson’s office any time before May 4thfor a chance to win a coffee inspired gift basket”. Bookmarks will be available at all the cafes as well as at CBAL’s office at 608 Lake Street.

Exley says, “Thanks so much to all the Lattes for Literacylocations. They have been incredibly supportive and jumped right in to create a fantastic first event!”

Visit all of the cafés on the trail! What better way to enjoy your morning java than to know you are  supporting literacy with every sip.
